Wobbly biker arrested for public intox after citizen makes call

by Jody Spear and Kelly Meyer –

MASON CITY – At approximately 8:15 p.m. Thursday night, a concerned citizen called the Mason City Police Department on a male subject wearing a t-shirt and white pants riding his bike on 12th Street NW and North Monroe. He apparently had fallen from his bike and the citizen thought he might be hurt.

The bike rider proceeded south on North Monroe, falling over several times (see picture, right) before deciding to walk his bike.

The Mason City Police Department stopped Christian George Andersen, age 40, around the 400 block of North Monroe, where he was arrested and taken to the Cerro Gordo County Jail on a Public Intoxication charge.

According to online records, Andersen plead guilty to 3rd degree harassment on June 4, 2012.  There was also a warrant issued for Andersen on June 5, 2012 related to a parole violation.

I wonder if there would be such an uproar if the headline read, “Citizen Turns in Sex Offender Riding Dirty”. Congrats to citizen who helped police nab a sex offender with a warrant for a probation violation.

I’m glad too that someone turned this guy in. How would you like to find this guy piled up on your front lawn drunk and injured?

I think the citizen who called did the right thing and I don’t want that to get lost amongst everyones complaints about the outcome. What if this man had a medical condition that was the reason for his inability to stay on his bicycle? A diabetic with dangerously low blood sugar or an epileptic experiencing a seizure? Or possibly having a stroke or heart attack? I would hope if someone saw myself or a member of my family in a similar situation they too would call for help and not turn a blind eye on the chance that whomever was “just intoxicated”

you are right jenni, we often lose site of what is really going on. this guy could of been having anything wrong with him, but when someone is arrested all we see is the negative. no one sees what is really there.

You guys Rock! Thanks for turning this trash in. He wasn’t just only intoxicated he was also wanted for parole violation. Lets keep cleaning this house!!! Thank You!

You people are full of drama and BS. Thanking someone for turning in a drunk.

What a bunch of do-gooders who think their shit don’t stink.

Get real! The guy was only intoxicated. It ain’t a big deal. Quit borrowing trouble from tomorrow.

Sir, if you like that in your neighborhood, keep it there. Many do not want that kind of behavior where they live. And guess which neighborhood prospers?

There’s some new Sheriffs on the street get over it Anonymous.

At least he wasn’t driving!

Great Job, Keep it coming! 🙂

Thank You to the person who turned this guy in. He could of got hit by a car and got killed and everyone knows its always the car drivers fault/and then gets fined or, for manslaughter even though the guy was drunk! Thank You!

Yay! Someone snitched!!

HAHA!

My how times have changed. In the 50’s, 60s, and 70s I know many fellows that drank to much and had to walk home. (No, I was not one of them.)

Instead of the Police picking them up and charging them, the Officer would give them a ride home as long as wasn’t belligerent.

This happens so rarely that I really see nothing good that comes of the fellow being thrown in jail. Lots of money will be spent on fines or mandatory drinking classes, or whatever.

I don’t know too many people that haven’t been intoxicated. Very few end up walking or using a bike to get home but the one’s that do should not have their lives turned upside down. At least they are not driving!

I vote with the guy that says it’s a bull-winkle charge and just burdens the system.

What has changed all that Watcher, are things called liabillity and litigation. Give the chap a ride home, and he gets hurt, there is no paper trail, and it becomes tacit acceptance of liability. Enough so that any court would award him lots of money. It raises a high risk even higher.

If you have a problem with people getting arrested for public intoxication…call or write your congressman or woman…they are the people who thought a law against such behavior was a necessity in the wonderful world we live in today.

I am sure that the drunk guy is still in jail and the asshole that shot the car is out! Sounds about right, i feel safer.

This guy looks a lot older than 40 year olds I know!

Is this Lamars brother?

If he walked into the path of my car and I killed him I’d have to live with that for the rest of my life. No one wants that.

Then of course, there’s all that damn paper work!!

I don’t want someone riding a bike falling down on the sidewalk in my neighborhood. Do you mind? What type of society do we want here? Stop excusing people for this bad behavior. If you are that drunk stay home! It’s time people stood up to the scumbags.

what if he was riding his bike home drunk from a bar?

Your comment pretty much says the real crux of this problem, and the dillema we face in Mason City. Do we find that behavior acceptable, or not. Too many people find it OK, normal. Most people I know, do not. We feel sorry for the chap, but, he created the situation. This is why people create such places as Pebble Creek, ect. To avoid people who behave like that.

So there is a large part of the population who are willing to drop the dime when a chap like this endagers himself or others.

And yes, there are spelling errors galore in my last comment, let’s just call it a brain failure.

He needs to trade his 2-wheeler in for a three or four wheel pedal bike. Perhaps add a lighted beacon on a mast too.

I think public intox is a bull faced charge. He is only hurting him self by walking or trying to ride a bike drunk. At least he is not behind a wheel of a car and driving. Cause that is way worse then walking or riding a bike drunk. Cause driving you could kill your self and others but a bike or walking you could just kill your self and give the drivers bad feelings for the rest of their lives if you walked into a road and they didnt see you
