MASON CITY – Michael Jason Cisneros, 37, will stand trial in October on a first degree murder charge brought last month by Mason City police invlolving the 1994 death of a child.

Records show that Cisneros’ trial is set for October 22nd, following a pre-trial conference that is set for October 8th. He has plead not guilty in the alleged murder of John Joseph Snyder Jr. who was just 20 months old when he died. 0n July 21, 1994 at approximately 9:56 am John Joseph Snyder Junior was found in Willow Creek just east of the Pennsylvania Avenue bridge in Mason City.

The case had gone cold in the years following until a DNA sample submitted by Michael Cisneros and the profile taken from the evidence submitted in December 2nd, 2002 – namely John Snyder Junior’s pajama bottoms – came back a match.   The first degree murder charge was filed against Cisneros in July.

Police held a press conference on July 15th to explain developments in the case.

Cisneros is currently in custody at Cerro Gordo County jail, held on $500,000 cash bond.

  1. People just want a closure thats all???? Its more complex then that. I was subpoenaed and forced to go to this trial on July 8th…. I had moved Baby John Snyder to my home over 20 years ago because John Sr. Was a very abusive man to the mother, I took him and his mom over 2 hours away bought him a crib, food, and some cloths. Guess who found us??? So please dont be to quick to toss someone into prison if its not the right person. WOW

  2. Cisneros is an Itilian (although sometimes thought to be Spanish in origin) name that be traced back as far as the 900s. It’s related to the Latin word for “swan”.

  3. Finally a closure to this case if all goes well. I remember this case well, wondering who could have taken that poor innocent babies life? Thank God for DNA samples and being able to find a match. Convicting skills are much better these days. TG for that.
