RUTHVEN — Troy Ellsworth Olson, 61, of Ruthven, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2026, at Spencer Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, loyalty and a love for family that will be cherished by all who knew him.
A celebration of life visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2026, at Geelan Funeral Home in Spencer.
Troy was born Nov. 2, 1964, in Emmetsburg to Garry and Janice (Kathman) Olson. He attended Ayrshire High School before the district consolidated with Ruthven, graduating from Ruthven-Ayrshire High School. During his school years, Troy distinguished himself as a talented distance runner on the track team.
Just days before his passing, on July 22, 2026, Troy married the love of his life, Bridgette Fitzpatrick, in Spencer. Although they were husband and wife for only a short time, they had shared years together building a relationship filled with love, laughter and countless memories.
Troy devoted 43 years of his professional life to Tecton Industries, where he earned the respect of coworkers through his strong work ethic, dependability and willingness to take on new challenges. During his career he held a variety of positions, spending much of that time as a lead machinist.
Away from work, Troy felt most at home outdoors. Hunting and fishing were lifelong passions, and he rarely missed an opportunity to enjoy Iowa’s woods, lakes and rivers. He also had a special affection for dogs and faithfully cheered for the Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Vikings.
Friends and family also knew him for enjoying life’s simple pleasures, whether it was sharing a meal at HuHot, stopping for Cold Stone ice cream or savoring his favorite mint chocolate chip ice cream.
Those closest to Troy will remember far more than his hobbies. They will remember a man whose quick wit could brighten a room, whose compassionate nature made everyone feel welcome and whose loyalty never wavered.
Family meant everything to Troy. He loved deeply, never judged others and always looked for the good in people. His generous heart and genuine concern for others left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
He is survived by his wife, Bridgette Olson; his children, Trey (Marie Jensen) Olson of Emmetsburg, Tyle Olson of Ayrshire and Tegan (Jordan) Williams of Arlington, South Dakota; his mother, Janice (Skip) Wallace of Emmetsburg; his sister, Jill (Doug) Williamson of Ruthven; his nieces, Keely (Travis) Ring, Rylee Williamson and Taylor Williamson; his nephew, Carter (Madisen) Williamson; his stepchildren, Robert (Brandi) Broadhead of Ayrshire, Catherine Hall of Spencer, Casey (Tyler) Climer of Spencer, Nathan Broadhead of Sioux City and Christopher Fitzpatrick of Spencer; his 16 grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Garry Olson.
Troy will be remembered as the kind of man who gave his whole heart to the people he loved. His compassion, integrity, humor and unwavering loyalty leave behind a legacy that will continue to inspire his family and friends for years to come.
