
STATE COLLEGE, PENNSYLVANIA – Former Iowa Hawkeye National Champion Spencer Lee has won the USA Olympic trials and will compete for a shot to wrestle in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Saturday in State College, Pennsylvania, the USA Wrestling Olympic Trials were held. As NIT previously reported, former Iowa Hawkeye Spencer Lee has been preparing for his shot at the Olympics. And Lee delivered, as usual, at these trials ay 57 kg weight, defeating Thomas Gilman in round 1, 6-3. He then defeated Gilman again in round two with a commanding pin.
Spencer Lee is a three-time NCAA champion and two-time Hodge Trophy winner. He earned five All-America honors, won three Big Ten championships, and was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Year in 2020, 2021, and 2023. During an undefeated run in 2020, Lee was named winner of the James E. Sullivan Award and was the NCAA’s most dominant wrestler. He finished his college career with an overall record of 98-6. He won 40 of those matches in the first period, including 29 by fall.
Lee will next compete at the World Olympic Qualifier in Turkey. This event is held on May 11-12. It will require a top-3 finish to qualify the US at 57 kg for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
