Iowa puts tighter reporting requirements on sex offenders

DES MOINES – Governor Kim Reynolds signed a public safety bill into law Thursday, putting more stringent reporting requirements on sex offenders.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, “before (this bill), those on the Sex Offender Registry could petition the courts to be removed in as little as 24-60 months whether they went on for 10 years or a lifetime. The public had no way of knowing who or where they were.

“Now, sex offenders must remain on the Registry for 10-15 years, depending on their tier level, before they can seek removal. Offenders will now stay on their community’s and law enforcement’s radar longer — to show they won’t be repeat offenders. And now, Iowa mirrors what most other states require.

It’s been 7 years in the making, and we would like to thank everyone who assisted in its passage including Governor Reynolds and her staff, Senator Reichman, Representative Klein, Senator Dawson, Senator Kinney, Senator Johnson, Senator Sinclair, Representative Westrich, and Representative Holt, as well as the entire legislature for nearly unanimously passing this important piece of legislation. Iowa is a safer place today for children and families!”
