Doherty leads NIACC at Iowa Central Fall Kickoff tournament

FORT DODGE – The NIACC men’s golf team placed fourth at the Iowa Central Fall Kickoff tournament Tuesday at the Fort Dodge Country Club.

The Trojans recorded a 319 in their opening round of the fall season.
Host Iowa Central won the tournament with a 296. DMACC was second with a 304 and Iowa Lakes was third with a 318.

“We’re certainly disappointed with our showing (Tuesday) but not discouraged,” NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. “We have to use this as a learning experience and simply get better, which I know we will.

“They all gave a good effort. There was never a quit in any of them even though it wasn’t their day.”

John Doherty, a freshman from Eden Prairie, Minn., led the Trojans with a 77.
“I was pleased with John Doherty”s round (Tuesday),” Frenz said. “He played solid for his first college competition.”

Also for the Trojans, JJ Wickman shot an 80, Beau Thompson shot an 81, Jack Barragy shot an 81, Hunter Heintz shot an 83 and Kai Nelles shot an 84.

NIACC returns to action Friday at the NIACC Fall Invitational. The tournament at the Mason City Country Club starts at 10:30 a.m.

“We’ll work on a few things as a team Wednesday and Thursday and get ready for our home meet,” Frenz said.
