Iowa advocacy group says the 14 anti-LGBTQ bills this legislative session caused harm to community

DES MOINES – An Iowa advocacy group says the 14 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced this legislative session caused harm to the LGBTQ community and will rally at the state capitol

On Monday, March 23rd, LGBTQ community members and allies will rally at the Iowa State Capitol to speak with lawmakers about the 14 anti-LGBTQ bills released this legislative session and how the community can best move forward. Although none of the bills advanced to the floor, the residual harm from these bills is being felt by LGBTQ Iowans across the state, the One Iowa Action group claims. LGBTQ community members and allies will gather at the Iowa Historical Building at 9am to participate in a “Talk to Your Legislator” training before gathering in the Capitol Rotunda to speak with legislators. Registration for the event is open to the public and required to participate in the training. More information and registration can be found at this link.

Anti-LGBTQ measures introduced this legislative session include a bill that would gag teachers from mentioning sexual orientation or gender identity, a bill that would discriminate against transgender athletes in schools, four bills which would undermine LGBTQ protections in the Iowa civil rights code by inserting sweeping religious exemptions, along with eight more harmful bills.

One Iowa Action Executive Director, Courtney Reyes, explained the rationale for organizing LGBTQ Day on the Hill.

“With 14 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced this year, we know it is incredibly important for people to feel like they can talk to their legislators. LGBTQ Day on the Hill is a great way to share what is important to you and thank the people who helped stop this harmful legislation.

People deserve to have their voices heard by the legislators who are making decisions that directly impact them. That’s why we’re rallying at the Capitol on March 23rd — to show legislators that we’re here and paying close attention.”

One Iowa Action is a 501(c)(4) organization working to preserve and advance the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) Iowans through grassroots efforts, voter education and advocacy.
