Consumers warned of diesel-tainted gas at Northern Iowa and Southern Minnesota stations

SAINT PAUL – The Minnesota Department of Commerce is alerting consumers that, between Friday and Saturday afternoons, diesel-tainted gasoline was delivered to 44 stations in southeastern Minnesota, as well as northeastern Iowa and western Wisconsin, from the Magellan Midstream Partners Rochester (Eyota) fuel distribution terminal.

Magellan reports that an operational malfunction inadvertently added small amounts of diesel fuel into gasoline, potentially affecting 87 octane gasoline distributed from the terminal and delivered to service stations, convenience stores and truck stops. Stations that may have received the diesel-contaminated gasoline in the Northern Iowa area were Kwik Trips in Cresco and Decorah and a Farmers Coop in Fredericksburg. Nearby, a Hy-Vee at 1001 18th Ave NW in Austin, Minnesota was also involved.

Magellan notified the Commerce Department’s Weights & Measures Division of the problem and the immediate actions it is taking to recover and replace the contaminated gasoline.

Commerce Department Weights & Measures inspectors will be testing samples at the stations to ensure that all problems are corrected. The Commerce Department will also investigate the operational cause of the contamination, Magellan’s response and its corrective actions.

While it is unlikely the small amount of contamination will cause severe or long-term vehicle damage, consumers who bought gas at the listed stations since Friday afternoon and experienced poor performance such as knocking or pinging should contact the Commerce Department’s Weights & Measures Division at https://mn.gov/commerce/consumers/file-a-complaint/wm/ or 651-539-1555.
