MANCHESTER, IOWA – A former Chicago woman who transplanted to this small Northern Iowa town left her four kids alone and police found her drunk, leading to her arrest.
On July 2, 2017 at 2:15 AM, the Manchester, Iowa Police Department was conducting an investigation at 113 Ludland Drive. During the course of that investigation, officers attempted to make contact with the occupant of the residence but no one answered the door. However, officers could see a 1-year-old child in the apartment. A family member was contacted and entrance was made into the apartment to check the welfare of the children that were present. Inside, officers found 3 children, ages 1, 4, and 7 with no supervision. Law enforcement did make contact with the mother – 27-year-old Shaunte D. Hughes, formerly of the Chicago, Illinois area – at approximately 3:00 AM. Officers discovered Hughes had left the children in the care of her 10-year-old daughter, who left the apartment to go to her grandmother’s apartment.
Police also say they discovered that Hughes had been consuming alcohol and tested above the legal limit for intoxication. She was arrested on three counts of child endangerment and taken to jail. Later, she was charged with obstructing prosecution or defense, an aggravated misdemeanor and disorderly conduct. She is due in court for arraignment August 2.
