Opinion: “Trickle down” only works for one class of citizens and that class is not the wage earner in Iowa

Letter to the Editor:

In the Iowa Legislature’s rush to provide additional tax breaks to the super-rich, the controversial Iowa tax law change benefiting manufacturers could cost the state $80 million more this year than projected, said one of the state’s top fiscal analysts. This is on top of a $250 million budget shortfall in fiscal 2018, the result of previous tax cuts to the super-rich.

Since its conception in the ‘80s, it has been documented time and time again “trickledown economics” does not create additional capital investment nor does it create an expanded job opportunities. “Trickle down” only works for one class of citizens and that class is not the wage earner in Iowa.

Since the Iowa Legislature has no intention on raising taxes on the rich, additional vital programs that serve the working class will be the target of devastating cuts. Look for additional cuts in education that will negatively affect your kids and grandkids; look for additional cuts in health care; look for more cuts to mental health programs; and keep your eye on the State reneging on backfilling property tax exemptions that mainly help the poor and working class of Iowa.

There will be lots of promises made to the laborers of Iowa: be patient; changes will benefit you in the long run; giving lucrative tax cuts to the super-rich will raise your wages and create good paying jobs.

This past election, one candidate for the Iowa Senate supposedly had over $1.4 million spent on his behalf to have him elected to the Iowa Legislature. $1.4 million for a seat that pays around $30,000 annually! Ponder this.

It is no longer Republican vs. Democrat. It is the super-rich vs. what was once a hard working proud middle class. This is the fight: The super-rich with their millions to spend vs. the rest of us. And if you believe the super-rich have your best interests in mind, I have a bridge in Mitchell County I am willing to sell you!

We, the working class, have been lied to, deceived and manipulated long enough! We may not have money to buy our seat in the legislature, but we do have the power of the ballot box. Come November 2018, we need to stand united in our votes. We need to unite against the rich and powerful and say “enough is enough”. It is time we demand accountability. It is time we demand our share of the pie.
