The Burlsworth Trophy is given annually to the most outstanding football player in the country who began his career as a walk-on. The award is in its seventh season and is named in honor of former Arkansas walk-on and All-American offensive lineman Brandon Burlsworth. Ryen is one of 52 players on the nominee list.
The Ida Grove, Iowa native, has been a do-it-all threat on offense and special teams during his Iowa State career. He has become one of the most dangerous and consistent punt returners in the country, with a season average of 16.3 yards per return, as well as four returns of 25 yards or more. Ryen also ranks second on the team in receptions (27) and third in receiving yards (299).
In 2015, Ryen was one of just eight players in the FBS to score a touchdown by rush, receiving and punt return, as his diverse skills were on full display. He was placed on scholarship following the third game of the 2015 season.
