MASON CITY – The Mason City High School and Alternative School started classes two hours late Thursday morning.  No other campuses were affected by this delay.

A message from the school district said that staff are to report on time.

According to reports, a suspicious package was located near the school and police were at the scene investigating.  Mason City Police officers had all entrances to the school area blocked off with yellow police caution tape.

Mason City police said Thursday morning the incident is under investigation and there was no threat to the public.

From Mason City School District:

To Mason City High School families,

This morning, a staff member noticed something suspicious in front of the building. Following protocol and procedures ensuring student safety, the police department was contacted. We apologize for the late notice of the two-hour delay; it was a precautionary step to give the police department enough time to finish their investigation. We are committed to creating a safe and secure environment each and every day in and around our schools.

We will be maintaining our normal attendance policy as we guarantee the school is safe and we will operate as we have with all other 2 hour delays – starting 3rd period at 10:45 a.m.

We will still hold the National Honor Society Induction tonight in the MCHS Information Center.

Please feel free to contact the office at Mason City High School if you have additional questions, concerns, or if you have information.

Sincerely

T.J. Jumper, Director of Secondary Programs
