MASON CITY – The annual Ride of Silence to promote awareness of bicycle riders will be held on May 18 in Mason City.
The Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe on Wednesday, May 18, 7:00PM local time at each location. This will be the thirteenth anniversary of the first Ride, held in Dallas, organized in about 10 days, when 1,000 cyclists gathered to honor a rider who had been killed by the mirror of a passing bus. It has grown each year nationwide and worldwide. In 2015, the Ride Of Silence was held in 319 locations worldwide, 49 U.S. states, 20 countries, and on 7 continents, with a 20,000+ riders.
This will be the tenth Ride of Silence in Mason City. Participants will be gathering at Central Park, downtown Mason City, at 7:00 PM on May 18. Following a short program, a slow, silent funeral-like ride will be begin. The route is 6 miles, and the maximum speed is 12 MPH. All riders are required to wear a helmet, and people who are not riding are encouraged to come for the program. There is no registration fee.
The Ride is endorsed by North Iowa SPIN cycling team, North Iowa Touring Club, and Mason City Blue Zones Project, and is supported by the Mason City Police Department.
