MASON CITY — Mason City has been selected to host the 2026 World Aerobatic Championship, bringing one of the world’s premier aviation competitions to North Iowa next summer.

Competition flying is scheduled for August 24 through September 2, 2026, at Mason City Municipal Airport.

The World Aerobatic Championship is the highest level of international competition aerobatics, drawing elite pilots from around the globe to compete for individual and team honors. More than 35 of the world’s top aerobatic pilots are expected to take part in the Mason City event.

Organizers say the championship has been relocated to Mason City while keeping its previously scheduled dates.

The competition will feature highly skilled pilots flying advanced aerobatic aircraft through demanding sequences of maneuvers. Pilots are judged on precision, control, energy management, spatial awareness and the quality of their performance while flying in three-dimensional airspace.

For aviation fans, that means a rare chance to see world-class aircraft and pilots perform at the highest level of the sport.

“We are excited to bring the World Aerobatic Championship to Mason City,” Contest Director Wayne Forbes said. “The airport facilities, community support, and central location make Mason City an outstanding venue for welcoming competitors, officials, volunteers, and spectators from around the world.”

The event is expected to bring pilots, judges, team members, volunteers, family members and aviation enthusiasts to North Iowa. Local officials and organizers expect the championship to generate economic activity through hotel stays, restaurants, transportation, tourism and other visitor spending.

The event also gives Mason City a chance to showcase itself to an international audience.

“We are honored to host this prestigious aviation event,” Mason City Airport Manager David Sims said. “Often compared to the Olympics of the aviation and aerobatic community, this event represents the very best in the industry, and we are proud to bring it to North Iowa.”

The World Aerobatic Championship is sanctioned by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, the international governing body for air sports. Pilots represent their respective countries while competing for world titles in a sport that demands intense discipline, technical skill and physical control.

Mason City organizers say the community’s airport facilities, central location, hospitality, downtown, cultural heritage and aviation support helped make it an ideal location for the championship.

In addition to the flying competition, visitors can expect opportunities to meet pilots, view aerobatic aircraft and take part in the atmosphere of an international aviation event.

More information about spectator opportunities, volunteer roles, sponsorships and event activities will be released as planning continues.
