Republicans block resolution to delay implementation

Statement by Senator Amanda Ragan of Mason City, Co-Chair of the Legislature’s Health Policy Oversight Committee:

“Iowans have urgent concerns about Medicaid privatization and they are desperately asking their legislators for help.

“That’s why I’m so disappointed the Health Policy Oversight Committee rejected a six month delay of Governor Branstad’s rush to privatize Medicaid services in Iowa.

“I supported this motion because of what I heard at community listening posts across Iowa and at this morning’s testimony by state officials. It is now clear that the Governor’s plan is a train wreck for hundreds of thousands of Iowans.

“A six-month delay would provide breathing room, time for Governor Branstad to provide good answers and to prove to Iowans that Medicaid privatization will NOT reduce access to affordable, high-quality health care.

“This morning’s testimony from state officials was not nearly enough to reassure Iowans receiving Medicaid services, their family members, caregivers and healthcare providers.

“Some of my legislative colleagues missed an important opportunity to make the health and wellbeing of 560,000 Iowans their top priority today.”
