NORTHWOOD – Worth county officials called for evacuations near the downtown after a gas leak.

The evacuations were called for after 10 AM and lifted by 10:55 AM. An apparent gas leak led emergency officials to call for residents to leave the area of Highway 65 near the courthouse. The situation was brought under control within about 25 minutes and everyone was allowed to go back to the area.

A source said that a fiber-optics line was being installed in the area when the gas line was ruptured.  According to Worth county officials, there was a gas leak on the west side of the court house which prompted the evacuation.
