SPIRIT LAKE — John Patrick Folsom, 77, passed away October 1, 2026, at Accura Healthcare in Spirit Lake.
A visitation will be held Monday, October 12, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1005 Hill Avenue in Spirit Lake. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the church. A livestream link is expected to be posted by the funeral home before the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be considered for the Children’s Hospital in Iowa City.
John was born February 2, 1949, in Des Moines to John and Kathleen Folsom. He graduated from Dowling High School and continued his education at Ellsworth College and Texas Christian University.
In 1968, John enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served as a sergeant until receiving an honorable discharge in 1972 and later became a life member of the VFW.
Over the years, John lived in Des Moines; Spokane, Washington; Fort Worth, Texas; Omaha, Nebraska; Chicago, Illinois; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and New Hampton before moving to Spirit Lake in 1990.
He built a career in banking and served as a president and CEO.
Away from work, John enjoyed golfing, escaping to the beach during the winter months and spending time with friends around Okoboji. Happy hour with the locals became one of the simple pleasures he especially enjoyed, reflecting the value he placed on friendships and the connections he made throughout his life.
John is survived by his daughters, Jennifer May and husband Bill and Sarah Hoffman and husband Sean; son Austin Folsom and wife Ashley; grandchildren William, Ella, Anna, Charlie, Grace and Annalise; and sisters Pam Ingamells, Kathy McHenry and Rhonda Haler.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Kathleen Folsom; son Michael Joseph Folsom; and sisters Colleen Christiansen and Sharon Cota.
