HAMPTON – The city of Hampton has pursued new city code to address indecent exposure, and made final approval of the new ordinance.

On December 8, the city council held a work session to look at a draft of an ordinance to deal with public exposure. City Manager Ron Dunt made a presentation to the council. The ordinance is necessary to enforce against individuals who expose themselves to others, Dunt said. Sources tell NIT that there is one individual in particular in Hampton whose activities include using his yard as a bathroom and at times has worn just a coat in his yard, and this situation has spurred the development of this ordinance.

The consensus at the work session was to consider the 1st reading of the ordinance at the next council meeting.

At the December 11 council meeting, Mayor Brook Boehmler introduced and offered the first reading of public exposure ordinance. City Manager Dunt read the ordinance and reviewed the intent in making this addition. The ordinance was approved on first reading unanimously, and went forward for more consideration.

At the December 22 council meeting, Mayor Boehmler introduced and offered the second reading of the public exposure ordinance. A motion was made by the council that the rule that an ordinance must be considered and voted on at two meetings prior to the meeting of final action be dispensed with the final reading and action be carried out that evening. The motion was approved unanimously and the ordinance passed unanimously.
