NORTHWOOD – No date has been set yet for a special election in Worth county for the vacant District 1 supervisor seat previously held by the late Dennis May, but Democrats and Republicans have chosen candidates.

Democrats have selected Tim O’Keefe as their candidate. Mr. O’Keefe is a former mayor of Manly and a small business owner.

Republicans have chosen Merlin Bartz, a former state legislator who has run an office for Congressman Steve King in Mason City for a couple of years.

The District 1 seat became vacant when Dennis May passed away on Saturday, November 15th. According to his obituary, Mr. May served 14 years as a state representative in 1980s, 90s and early 2000s before retiring from that position to pursue a seat on the Worth County Board of Supervisors. He was elected county supervisor in Worth county in 2002 and served until his death.

Worth county officials voted to hold a special election to fill the vacancy. They have not yet set a date.

@ LVS I would hardly call Merlin Bartz a tax and spend guy. Or an idiot. Do your research before spouting off.

@Griz-I was not pointing out Bartz at all. I know very little about him. I was just making a general statement about politicians in general.

Would have liked to have see some new tea party blood instead of corporate givaway good old boys.

@bad pontiac-we just never seem to learn do we? we just keep re-electing these idiots. I really think a lot of it has to do with the money they are able to spend. It makes it hard for someone without money to get elected. Also, who in their right mind would sign up for all the election lies and abuse.

Wonder if Mr. Bartz will encourage the Worth County Recorder break the law in regards to same-sex couples marriage licenses?

Would you care to elaborate on that?
