MC man who pointed gun at children and threatened to shoot them arrested for violating probation

MASON CITY – A Mason City man who was arrested two years ago after a confrontation with police over a gun has been arrested for violating his probation.

Gary Kalvig, age 65, was picked up by Mason City police at his home on September 3 after a warrant was issued the day before for his arrest for violating the terms of his probation in a 2012 case.

On the evening of August 8, 2012, Mason City police officers were dispatched to the 000 block of North Tennessee Avenue reference an adult male subject in the caller’s property armed with a long gun.  Several officers were dispatched, arriving on scene a short time later.  While officers were setting up a perimeter, witnesses pointed out the subject outside another property located in the 100 block of North Tennessee Ave. Officers made verbal contact with the subject – Gary Kalvig – and were able to talk him into walking over to the them unarmed.

Officers conducted an investigation at the scene interviewing several adult and juvenile witnesses.  According to police, Kalvig apparently was upset about kids playing in the neighborhood so he decided to threaten them with a weapon. He left his property going armed, walking to where a group of juveniles were standing. He then proceeded to threaten and pointed the weapon at them.  He told one of the juveniles that he was going to kill him.

In the wake of that incident, Kalvig was charged with felony D going armed with intent, felony D threat of terrorism, aggravated misdemeanor carrying weapons, aggravated misdemeanor first degree harassment and public intoxication.

Kalvig later accepted a plea deal where the charge of going armed with intent was dismissed, threat of terrorism was reduced to intimidation with a dangerous weapon (a deferred judgement), pled guilty to carry weapons, harassment was dismissed and the charge of public intoxication was dismissed. He was sentenced to two years of probation, while fines and prison time were suspended. He paid $1,400 in court costs.

With the probation violation, Kalvig could face all or part of his original sentence. He awaits a September 29 hearing while he is held on $5,000 cash-only bond.

Gary Kalvig SUBJECT IS INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY.
