UPDATED: Pedestrian is dead after being hit by car on South Monroe Ave.

MASON CITY – A male pedestrian has died after being struck by a van on South Monroe Avenue Tuesday evening.

At 6:42 pm, Mason City Police and Ambulance were dispatched to the 900 block of South Monroe for a car / pedestrian accident.

According to police Wednesday morning, Gayle Shatek of Mason City was driving a Honda Odyssey van northbound in the outside lane of the 900 block of South Monroe Avenue when her car collided with a pedestrian who was walking on or into the roadway. The pedestrian, Clyde Parker Jr., suffered serious injuries and later died at Mercy Hospital.

At the scene Tuesday evening, police had all of South Monroe blocked off, from the south side of Elmwood Cemetery’s south entrance north to Schukei Chevrolet. Shatek was being escorted and questioned by police officers, while other officers did more investigating.

Parker was taken right away by ambulance to Mercy Medical Hospital. The word NIT received is that Parker was a Beje Clark resident.

A couple pulled up in their car and made the comment, “We had just went down S. Monroe shortly before this and saw a man walking. He was wearing dark clothing and we almost hit him.”

Mason City police said Tuesday before 11 PM that immediately after the incident, paramedics arrived on the scene and began treatment on Parker.  Mason City police accident reconstructionists were called to the scene to investigate the accident.  The investigation is on-going at this time.  Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area and witnessed a pedestrian in the street at the accident location to call 641-421-3636 and talk to police.

The city has little concern for pedestrians.

Just look at the area around Federal and 4th or 5th. Businesses, if they shovel sidewalks at all, have snow piled up at intersections so pedestrians have no choice at all except walking in the streets.

I strongly agree with the others, THIS is what money should be spent on. THIS is what the function of city government should be about.

This was a bad deal and feel for all involved. Max Weaver addressed this a few year back saying we need to do something. We should have listened to him, he has been right on may things.

It is sad that the person died but, if the city does a study (and it will) the study will show there is not enough foot traffic to justify a sidewalk. These people that are walking at night need to take some personal responsibility and dress so they can be seen. It is the same with bike riders, they ride all over town and shoot across intersections, ride on the traveled portion of the road and still wear dark colored clothes with no light on the bike. There are a couple of them up here in the north end. I see them every morning when they go under the street light. If I was driving there is no way the would be seen until it was to late. Take responsibility for your own well being and dress correctly and put lights on your bike.

We passed a man dressed in black that same evening on 6th SW. No sidewalks there either. Can’t see them dressed in black. So sad.

Very sad, BUT, you should also know better than to walk in the roadway with dark cloths, at night! Yes, I travel this road ALOT and this is not uncommon. Feel bad for the driver as well.

Very sad!

Not sure exactly where this occurred on S. Monroe but I travel that road almost daily and often encounter people walking in the street as there is no sidewalk from approximately “Airgas” south to the YMCA. Please contact your councilperson and encourage them to install a sidewalk/biking path along this busy street.

Prayers to the pedestrians family and the family of the driver.

need to put a bike path from bg clark to downtown so these ya hoos can walk or ride their bikes.

Since someone has been seriously injured now maybe they will put a walk path. I drove past here early this morning and there was 2 more people walking in the road both with black clothing on. (common sense)
Correct me if I’m wrong but years ago wasn’t there a bicyclist hit on this same road and he laid on the shoulder of the road for a long time before someone seen him?
