Brownsville, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Los Indios International Bridge at the Brownsville, Texas port of entry intercepted a man and a woman for alleged violations of immigration law. The woman a citizen of Mexico and the man a United States citizen allegedly attempted to facilitate a Mexican child’s entry into the United States without valid entry documents.
On Thursday, July 4, 2013 at the Los Indios International Bridge a 39-year-old female Mexico citizen and a male U.S. citizen both residing in San Benito, Texas and a minor child applied for admission to enter the United States. A CBP officer’s primary inspection resulted in the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer and its occupants being referred to CBP secondary for further examination. In passport control secondary a CBP officer identified the minor child as a seven-year-old Mexican citizen with no legal document to enter or reside in the United States.
CBP officers took the adults into custody for alleged violations of immigration law. The Mexican minor child was processed as an unaccompanied alien child and will be placed in the care of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Refugee Resettlement (HHS-ORR).
“This alleged smuggling attempt was stopped by Brownsville’s CBP officers working to protect our borders and helping to keep these children safe from potential harm,” said Michael Freeman, Port Director, Brownsville.
