“Rally to save America’s postal service” to be held in Des Moines Sunday

Mason City post office. Saturday mail deliver will soon be suspended.

DES MOINES – A rally in Des Moines as part of national Day of Action in Iowa and across the country, will be held to “to save America’s postal service” according to the Iowa AFL-CIO labor group:

Iowa Working families, community members, faith leaders, and seniors will rally with postal employees Sunday at 1 p.m. in front of the main post office (1165 2nd Ave) in Des Moines as part of rallies nationwide to Save the United States Postal Service.

The plan to end Saturday delivery and the proposed closing of postal facilities is an attack on the future of the U.S. Postal Service and will result in deep service cuts to every American, at home and in business, in every community across the country. Unfortunately political rhetoric has often resulted in the public hearing misleading and incomplete information on this critical issue.

The Postal Service isn’t broke, but is facing a current shortfall due to a congressional mandate to pre-pay for costs that won’t be due for decades.
The Postal Service’s plan to shrink the Postal Service and end six-day service is an attack on the future of this great institution, on the customers who need it and on the employees who support it. Many Americans — especially small-business owners, senior citizens and rural residents — would suffer if the strength and reach of our Postal Service is compromised. In addition, cutting Saturday Mail would delay important household and business transactions, including bills, invoices and personal communications, and may force customers to shift to high-cost competing services.
The U.S. Postal Service is America’s only universal communications network, reaching every address in America six days a week. Established by the Constitution and using no taxpayer funding for its operations, the Postal Service is a vital public institution that Iowa cannot afford to see dismantled.
WHO: Iowans concerned about saving the Postal Service from deep cuts that will hurt citizens and businesses in our community.

WHEN: Sunday, March 24 from 1-2 pm
WHERE: 1165 2nd Ave in Des Moines. In front of the main post office.

They are trying to do what is necessary under today’s conditions which is exactly what they should do. It won’t bother me at all if they cut back to 5 days a week.

How will I survive without my Saturday junk mail?

*despair*

I don’t want mail any day of the week. I will take may packages any day. I would say 99% of letters are a complete waste of may time to even see who sent it. Who would send something in the mail when its free to those who have computers. I know everyone dose not. But if they don’t change now, what in another 10, 20 years. Wake up labor money takers.
