MASON CITY – Once again this year, a dedicated group of Mason City citizens held an annual clean up of the city’s south side Georgia Hanford neighborhood.
The citizens, working as a team through the Georgia Hanford Neighborhood Association, braved a virtual downpour of rain all Saturday morning, ruled by Casey’s coffee and doughnuts and goodwill. The folks toiled at the Georgia Hanford Park parking lot as their neighbors arrived with pickup trucks full of old appliances and electronics, furniture, junk, trash and other debris. Residents from all over the neighborhood hauled their debris to the huge receptacles from Waste Management.
The is about the eleventh year in a row the clean-up event has been held. The neighborhood association had help from the City of Mason City.
Like always, volunteer Chris Watts (a Cerro Gordo county supervisor) helped organize the group into action. Also there was his faithful compadre Larry Solberg, and several other mainstays who believe in keeping the neighborhood tidy. Residents were asked for a few dollars to toss the large items and the appliances into several large junk receptacles parked in the lot.
“This has been a pretty successful venture over the years, and a lot of people take advantage of the opportunity,” Mr. Watts explained.
