DES MOINES – AFSCME Iowa Council 61 President Danny Homan released the following statement on the newest Paul Ryan Budget:
“Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) and House Republican leaders have introduced a budget that will kill jobs, devastate the economy, and hurt Iowa families.
“The Ryan budget is full of bad ideas that do not reflect Iowans’ values. In Iowa, we take care of our parents and grandparents. The Ryan budget converts Medicare into a voucher, which means that seniors will pay more and get less.
“And it doesn’t end there. It cuts education, repeals the Affordable Care Act, dismantles child nutrition, and other vital programs. All the while, the budget gives big new tax breaks to the wealthiest and continues to allow corporations to hide money off shore and ship jobs overseas. That defies common sense, and frankly, is just wrong.
“We need solutions that work, not schemes that will kill jobs in Iowa.
“AFSCME Iowa calls on Representatives Latham and King to stand up against any budget that treats Iowa’s working families like a punching bag. We deserve a budget that supports the middle class by protecting Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid and other vital services from harmful cuts.”
