Bob Havig was on his way home from work when he noticed a brush fire out-of-control at Spruce Avenue and 230th Street, Friday evening around 5:30 pm.
“I called the fire in. It was climbing up some of the power-line poles,” said Havig. “This is the second time this has happened. It started by the creek on 230th Street, by Spruce Avenue, and gain strength, probably due to the wind.”
Firefighters were called and were putting out the flames. Before they had arrived a man was out in the flames with a rake, trying to control it.
“I hope he was checked out,” said Havig, “he was in that smoke and flames for at least a half hour inhaling all that smoke.”
Asking the man, after the fire was under control if he was alright, he replied, “Yeah, I’m fine, I was just trying to help out.” The man’s name wasn’t immediately available.
The fire spread down the ditch about a half mile, going toward Raven Avenue. It stopped shortly after Larry Zilge’s farm at 18713 230th Street.
