MASON CITY – Now that the Mason City Parks Board has formally approved a new sledding hill in south east Mason City, the project’s coordinator, Ozzie Ohl, can set about raising the dollars needed to get the project completed.
The hill has been approved with lighting and with the blessing of Anita and Jim Gerk who are supporters of and donors to the Georgia Hanford park.
Ohl says that the Georgia Hanford sledding hill project will cost approximately $20,000. That amount includes hill preparation, providing ample seating, and installing electricity and lighting.
Ohl helped coordinate a fundrasier last Friday at Roller City for the project where half the proceeds went to the sledding hill.
Moving forward, “I will be relying on the generosity of the people of Mason City to get this done,” Ohl explained.
One of the ways interested persons can contribute to the project is by sponsoring a concrete bench. For $500, the benches can be personalized. “The are very durable,” Ohl said. “Names of loved ones or your own name can be placed on the bench permanently.”
Ohl has an account set up at City Hall, the “Georgia Hanford Sledding Hill Project” where anyone can donate to the project.
Anyone interested in contributing to the sledding hill can also make a tax deductible contribution to the City of Mason City. In the memo line, it should be marked “Sledding Hill”. To purchase a permanent bench in honor of a loved one, contact Ozzie Ohl at ozzieohlonemanthinktank@

Like the idea of a sledding hill but had a question.I thought the benches were going to be that hard plastic like all the other benches in the park.
Great park. Wonderful idea. This will be something my family will certainly enjoy. Let it snow!
Can’t wait to take my kids sledding. Sounds like this will be a lot nicer and safer than east Park.
I talked to Ohl when he was at the annual Watts picnic last summer. He seemed like a decent guy. Hope he gets the $20,000. He told me personally that no taxpayer money is being spent on this. Only three people talked about this unfavorably and Marcia she thinks the park belongs to her. Get er done so me and my four kids can enjoy sledding close to where we live.
We have a sledding hill. This is not was the land was donated for and once again local residents views don’t matter. No tax money for this.
If the people that live around the sledding hill in East park don’t want it there should we get rid of it?
No but the next one should go by your property.
