NIACC women’s golf places two in top-10

PANORA, Iowa – The NIACC Trojan women’s golf team wrapped up the two-day Iowa Intercollegiate Golf Tournament with two top-10 finishers.

Alexandria Eckenrod (Fr., Mason City, IA) shot 83 in both days for a 166 total, which gave her a sixth place finish in the tournament.  Mikayla Smith (Fr., Mason City, IA) struggled in day one with a 92, but rebounded with a 79 to place ninth with 171.

Sarah Steinauer (Fr., Clarinda, IA) entered the day tied for ninth, but withdrew from the tournament due to illness. Moriah Sherman (Fr., Charles City, IA) also didn’t compete because of illness.

“It was a real solid opening tournament for us,” NIACC golf coach Chris Frenz said. “Alexandria started off not hitting many fairways, but once she got going she really played well.  Mikayla Smith bounced back from a tough first day like I knew she would.

“This early in the season, it’s good to see them hit the ball so well and compete against good competition with a number of four-year schools in the tournament.”

NIACC competed mostly against NAIA schools at the event.  Maggie Yang of William Penn University won the individual title with 151, while William Penn won the team event.  NIACC did not have a team score because of not having enough players.

The next tournament for the women’s team is April 5 at the DMACC Invite in Boone.
