This year, transit systems based in Waterloo and Dubuque were honored at the Iowa Public Transit Training Conference and Bus Roadeo in Okoboji June 23.

The award for the regional system was given to Iowa Northland Regional Transit Commission (RTC), also known as Region 7. RTC provided 154,000 rides in 2010, with an 11.2 percent increase in ridership from 2009, while decreasing the cost per ride by more than 27 percent. Transit Director Brian Schoon attributes these accomplishments to new services RTC is providing that increase efficiency. This is the second time RTC has received this award, having previously been a recipient in 1989.

The award for the most improved urban transit system was presented to Dubuque’s transit system, The Jule. The Jule provided more than 371,000 rides in 2010, an increase of 10.7 percent, while decreasing the cost per ride by 14.5 percent. The Jule General Manager Barbara Morck stated the 2010 accomplishments are due to the rise in environmental awareness, especially in Dubuque where there is an ongoing citywide sustainability initiative, the increased costs involved in operating personal vehicles and improved internal record keeping. This is the first time the city of Dubuque has received this award.

All 99 Iowa counties are served by public transit systems that provide more than 26 million rides per year. For more information on public transit services in general or on any of Iowa’s 35 public transit agencies, visit www.iowadot.gov/transit/agencies.html.|
