“Governor, do you or do you not favor cutting taxes for 240,000 working Iowans?”

Statement by Senator Joe Bolkcom, chair of the Senate Ways and Means Committee: Governor, answer the question: ‘Do you or do you not favor increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit to put money in the pockets of 240,000 working Iowans and to boost local economies around the state?’ |Statement by Senator Joe Bolkcom, chair of the Senate Ways and Means Committee

“Today, Monday, April 25 Governor Branstad will hold his first statehouse news conference since vetoing a tax cut that would have benefited 240,000 working Iowans making less than $45,000 a year.

The governor has, to this point, refused to simply say if he is or is not in favor of this tax cut.

The rationale he gave in his veto message was obvious misdirection and was contradicted by his own actions in the past and on that very day. You can’t claim that you are vetoing tax legislation because you want to address tax issues comprehensively when you have already signed tax legislation, including signing tax legislation that very day.

On Monday, April 25, at his regular news statehouse conference, the Governor should come clean with the people of Iowa. He should either state his objections to providing this tax cut to working families, or he should commit to signing this legislation the next time he has the opportunity to do so.

“Iowans are watching and paying attention to this issue. The governor’s slippery statements and lack of good faith bargaining on this issue casts a cloud over his relations with the Iowa House and certainly with the Iowa Senate.

“Rebuilding trust starts with directly answering this question: ‘Governor, do you or do you not favor increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit to put money in the pockets of 240,000 working Iowans and to boost local economies around the state?’”
