MASON CITY – City Administrator Brent Trout is recommending that King Knutson Construction Inc. of Clear Lake be selected as the general contractor for the Mason City City Hall first floor renovation.
Waggoner & Wineinger architects are managing the project.
If approved by the council, City staff would negotiate a final contract that would be voted on October 16th.
Construction will begin on November 1, 2012 at a total cost of $66,731.
According to a City Hall memo, work will be completed during City Hall regular hours with weekends and evening hours as necessary. The project must be complete by the end of November.
If people don’t like the way the city is trying to draw in new businesses, let them go to the city council meetings, stand up, and give us the benefit of their ideas and suggestions.

Oh sure that will work. The mayor will just sit there and make faces and the council members will play with their I-pads. All the smaller towns around have new businesses but Mason City hasn’t had a new manufacturing business in years. There has to be a reason for that and I think it starts with the attitude at city hall. Maufacturing jobs are the kind of jobs that will improve workers standard of living and for some reason we just lose them and never get them back.
The next mayor will benefit more than the one we have now! bookmeyer only has one year left the next mayor will at least 4 years to enjoy it!!!
Even though this is not a huge amount…why didn’t we use the statue money to pay for this? confused?
It’s like any time we have extra money, the city spends it, not saves it.
How about a program to help new business growth. I mean one that REALLY works, not one that gives $100,00 to a motorcycle owner that already has a successful business, but to NEW businesses that need a boost. I have personally talked with five of the new businesses listed here in former posts, they are right, this town is new business UNFRIENDLY.
Why do we need to pay architects to manage this project. We have lots of engineers on staff that could run this project. It’s bad enough that we are wasting this money without our spending more unnecessarily.
…because THAT makes sense.
I admit that $66,731 isn’t too bad a price. Besides, this will mean a few jobs for someone by doing this renovation.
Well, your tax dollars are at work. Remind me again why we need to spend all of this money remodeling city hall? Oh yes, to accomodate the mayor and the council. What a waste! No jobs coming to town any time soon, though!!!!!!!!!!!!!
..as posted before, the reason for this lack of growth is that our mayor/board have NEVER owned a new business.They have no idea what it takes. When our mayor suggested that lowering building property taxes would help new businesses locate here, goes to show you how LOST he is…new businesses RENT/LEASE they do not BUY.With the hospital using up any retail spots they can find,and not build, it takes away new businesses possible locations.
The cost of property taxes is figured into the rent, it is passed on to the renters as well. We need to lower commercial property taxes.
