Heather Nicole Mennen came into the world with a spark on the morning of April 18, 2003, the much-loved daughter of Douglas and Kendra (Ballard) Mennen. From her first breath, she carried a spirit that was equal parts spunky, sweet, and strong. She was welcomed into a busy, loving home with her siblings Nick, Ben, and Elizabeth, who quickly learned that life with Heather would be anything but ordinary.
Heather faced health challenges from day one, but she never let them define her. Instead, she met them head-on with resilience and grace, forging deep connections with doctors, nurses, and hospital staff along the way. She had a way of making people feel seen, heard, and appreciated — even in the most clinical of settings.
She graduated from Newman Catholic High School in 2021 and later earned her degree from North Iowa Area Community College. At Newman, she found her place in the world of cheerleading and music. Heather had no fear when it came to using her voice — she would rally the crowd by herself while her teammates prepared for a routine, and she sang with a bold, heartfelt sound that made every performance feel personal.
Music wasn’t just a hobby for Heather. It was her language. She played piano, guitar, and nearly any instrument she could get her hands on, often teaching herself by ear. Her creativity didn’t stop there. Heather also taught herself to crochet, eventually crafting animals like unicorns, butterflies, and elephants, and gifting them to the people she loved most.
She had a deep and natural connection with children and dreamed of becoming a pediatric nurse. Her time spent at the Newman Childcare brought her immense joy, and she had a gentle, calming way with the little ones that made her a favorite among them.
Heather lived life with intention. She was a planner, perfectly organized, yet laid back. She worked hard, always finishing what needed to be done, then made sure to carve out time to care for herself and those around her. Her persistence was quiet but powerful. She didn’t make excuses, and she didn’t seek attention. She just kept going, in her own way and on her own terms.
She was deeply devoted to spreading joy. Sometimes it was with a handwritten note tucked into someone’s locker. Other times, it was a kind word, a thoughtful gesture, or simply her steady presence. Heather could make friends with anyone. She made people feel better — about their day, about their situation, about themselves.
Alongside her constant companion, her support dog Shyla, Heather brought light wherever she went. The two were inseparable. Wherever Heather went, Shyla went too — and together they lit up every room they entered.
Heather’s life, though far too short, was filled with music, meaning, and love. She leaves behind a family who adored her, a community who admired her, and a legacy of kindness, creativity, and quiet strength.
Her love lives on in every life she touched and in all those who will forever carry her in their hearts.
