Ragan: Deep budget cuts will hurt Iowa families

State Senator Amanda Ragan

MASON CITY – Senator Amanda Ragan of Mason City, ranking member of
the Health and Human Services Budget Committee, said Tuesday that deep budget cuts will hurt Iowa families.

In a statement released Tuesday, Senator Ragan said “Last week Iowans learned that deep cuts are being made to essential health care services provided by the Department of Public Health, cuts that will hurt Iowa families and increase future health care costs. For example, Iowa children will be denied hearing aids and vision screening, making it much harder for them to succeed in school and in life. We should work together to fix this mistake.”

The Iowa Department of Public Health is making an $1.3 million in cuts to an already tight budget, it announced last week. Iowa’s revenues have shrank under the Republican-led legislature and under Terry Branstad as governor, leading to cuts across the board. New governor Kim Reynolds may need to dip into reserves to keep services flowing.

Well, the deep budget cuts won’t hurt this Iowa family. The State of Iowa does NOTHING for my family but take my money away from us and make it harder for me to make ends meet.

You don’t make any sense to us.

How typical of this spendthrift. She wants to spend money that the state does not have so she can buy votes. The sooner we get rid of people like her the better. They need to put all the people who are on welfare and able to work to work. Then you increase the tax base and can buy more. Giving people more charity is not the answer.

Is it concerning to you that despite a strong national economy, this state is having problems balancing its budget?

How much of that do you think is a function of corporate property tax breaks initiated by Branstad? This tax break was advertised as a needed lynch pin to spur the states economic growth. Yet Iowa currently ranks 40-something in terms of economic growth (interestingly, Iowa was ranked itn he top 15 for economic growth when Chet Culver was in office).

I agree with the fact that people who are on welfare need to work. However, what about those that ARE actually working many hours in a week and on the weekend that try to make ends meet while raising children in a single family and still need some help? Not everyone on welfare doesn’t try to provide for their family and have jobs. It is just stereotyping and assuming everyone on state assistance isn’t working.

Ragan is good as gone, should of never got in. She will lose next year, only ones wants a career politician in there is her groupie’s. Time for her to go back to sling hash at the kitchen. Full time. Amanda, she makes money off that to.

Do people in Iowa’s sanctuary cities have to work for a living or do they just collect welfare and increase insurance costs for the private sector. What 29 counties in Iowa are sanctuary – is that right?
