Harlan Smeins, 96, of Ackley, passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at his home in Ackley. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at St. John U.C.C. in Ackley with burial in East Friesland Cemetery. Visitation will be an hour before the service. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley.

Harlan Smeins, 96, of Ackley, passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at his home in Ackley. Harlan was born on March 22, 1928 to Fred and Anna (Bulten) Smeins in Aplington, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Martha Van Hove on February 28, 1956. He and Martha had two children, Darla and Bryce. Harlan went to country school through eighth grade and later enlisted in the United States Army. He was a member of the American Legion for 59 years, including the firing squad, and the East Friesland Choir for more than 25 years. He enjoyed dancing and country music gatherings with friends. Most of all, Harlan enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s events and playing with his great-granddaughters. They were his source of joy.

Harlan is survived by his wife Martha, daughter Darla Luchtenburg of Cedar Rapids, IA, his son Bryce (Krista) Smeins of Washington, IA, grandsons Travis (Susie) Luchtenburg of Cedar Rapids, IA, Austin (Lindsay) Luchtenburg of Tiffin, IA, Joe (Tristan) Smeins of Waterloo, IA, granddaughter Greta (Blandon) Clemons of Washington, IA, great-granddaughters Ryan, Alice, Lennox, Ophelia Luchtenburg and Quinn Clemons, sisters-in-law Anna Mae Smiens of Aplington, Shirley Smeins of Earlville and sister-in-law Gretchen Van Hove, brother in law Mike Kurth and numerous nieces and nephews.

Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Catherine Whitmire, Genevieve Neymeyer, brothers Eppogene Smiens and Paul Smeins, great-granddaughter Carson Grace, brother-in-law Ben Van Hove and sister in law Willie Van Hove.
