Virgil Homer, 88, of Aredale, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2024, at the Eldora Specialty Care Center in Eldora. Woodley Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for Virgil and his family.

Born on August 21, 1935, in Evanston, WY, he was a beloved figure in his community, known for his generous and fun-loving cowboy spirit.

Virgil proudly served in the Army, where he embraced the camaraderie and discipline that shaped his later years. After his military service, he found his calling as a truck driver for many years, as well as helping his wife, Helen, run and manage “Grandma’s” in Aredale where he was a familiar and friendly face to all who passed through the doors.

Beyond his career, Virgil was a man of many interests and always kept his life filled with joy. He enjoyed many years raising and riding horses with his family and friends. In his later years, he loved trail riding and cruising around in his Roxor, often with a good friend by his side. He was a master storyteller, whose tales could captivate any audience and was often found surrounded by friends and family, sharing laughs, good times, and a cold one. No matter who had gathered around at the end of the night, he would always say “They are all good people.”

He is survived by his children, Scott (Karan) Homer and Matt (Deb) Homer; grandchildren Jesse Homer, Michele (Rob) Schmidt, Lora (Travis) Lumley, and William Homer; great-grandchildren Cecelia and Harrison Schmidt; siblings Dora Oitzman and Mike Creeden; and many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Virgil was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, his parents, Virgil and Reba, and his brother, Tom.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at New Hope United Methodist Church in Aredale. Visitation will take place the same day at the church from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Following the service, Virgil will be laid to rest at the Dumont Cemetery. His life and legacy will be remembered fondly by all who knew him, as a man who was truly a friend to everyone.
