Ronald “Ron” Jay Hoffman was born (October 28, 1947) and raised in Independence, Iowa to Warren and Bernadine (Clue) Hoffman along with his brother and two sisters. In school, Ron was a sports and music enthusiast. He excelled in football, basketball, track, and baseball. He played the trumpet and was in three different All-State choir quartets. He was also a lead in three musicals. He worked for many years to become an Eagle Scout and received Order of the Arrow recognition. He also carried groceries and worked as a painter so he could afford his first car, a 1954 Packard.

He was always grateful to his family and school for making it possible to participate in so many various activities.

He graduated from high school in 1966 and headed to Sioux City to attend Morningside College. He graduated from Morningside as a mathematics major and minored in physical education.

Ron’s life changed when he met his wife Vicki Berger during their time at Morningside. Ron and Vicki married in Spirit Lake July of 1968. They had two daughters and four beautiful grandchildren. This year would have been Ron and Vicki’s 55th wedding anniversary.

In 1970, he joined the Iowa National Guard in Sioux City and worked on construction for his brother-in-law, until teaching jobs for the next year started. His first teaching position was in Lytton, Iowa, where he was the entire high school math department. He also coached basketball, track, and summer baseball. He then moved the family to Perry, Iowa and taught Jr. High math, pre-algebra, and algebra. He also coached girls’ basketball, track and served as the Junior High Athletic Director.

After obtaining his masters from Iowa State University, he became the Vice Principal of Perry High School in 1987. This led to his position with Charles City as Middle School Principal in 1990. Ron retired from Charles City Community Schools in July of 2012. He remained in Charles City as a dedicated community and church member.

As an educator, Ron inspired confidence in his students. As a coach, he strove to instill a competitive spirit in his athletes. His goal was to help his students succeed in school and life.

As a father and grandfather, he combined it all, along with boundless and unwavering pride and support.

Ron was a devoted family man and loving husband. He cherished spending time with his family and friends. Playing games, golfing, singing around the piano, setting up camping and vacations together were just some of the ways Ron filled our lives.

He was so loved. We will miss him terribly.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Vicki from Charles City; children: Sarah (Warren) Schmitt from Dakota Dunes, South Dakota and Heather (Vince) Penningroth from Ankeny; grandchildren: Abigail (Austin) Williams, Luke Schmitt, Audrey Penningroth, Jackson Penningroth; siblings: Marge Merfeld, Dennis (Dawn) Hoffman, Nancy Smith; along with many more relatives and friends.

Greeting him in heaven are his loving parents, Warren and Bernadine Hoffman, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
