Darrell L. Alitz, 60, of Mason City, passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2023 after battling cancer for over two years.

Darrell was born in Mason City, Iowa on November 9, 1962, and was raised in Plymouth, Iowa by his parents Harvey and Elaine (Anderson) Alitz with his four siblings. Darrell attended North Central High School in Manly, IA. In his younger years, he enjoyed the physical labor of working on the farm bailing hay, getting behind a wheel of a tractor and milking cows. He always said that he loved manual labor and that he was built for it. Standing at six foot six inches tall with shoulders as broad as a barn he was right! He was nicknamed Buck when he was a young boy by an uncle and it stuck for decades. As he got older all his friends referred to him as big DA which he admittedly enjoyed. Throughout the years he worked at several different factories in Mason City with Armour Swift Eckrich being his last employer. He was an extremely hard worker with an excellent work ethic that he took great pride in. Darrell was a nature lover. He loved long walks at Lime Creek Nature Center, taking pictures of the various wildlife and enjoying the serene scenery. He was fascinated by storms and jokingly considered himself to be an amateur storm chaser. Before his diagnosis of cancer he would ride his Trek bike all over northern Iowa and southern Minnesota putting over two thousand miles on it in one summer. He participated in Ragbrai one year which is something he had always wanted to do. He loved the long, hot months of summer and would always say, the hotter the better. His favorite meal was salmon off the grill, seasoned Brussels sprouts and a cold bottle of vitamin water. He was addicted to grape five hour energy drinks, although, he would deny it with a smile on his face if asked. He enjoyed going out for breakfast and coffee on Sundays with his friends Bill and Tom and voicing his opinions with conviction on worldly matters. He was very social and had many friends that he would talk with, sometimes daily. Darrell was very close to his family and loved nothing more then stopping by and hanging out with them; especially if they were all together at the same time. It was not uncommon for him to be talking on the phone with one of his siblings and add another sibling to the conversation by conference call and talk for several hours. It was a family thing that they all enjoyed! Darrell was a giver; a giver of his time, of his friendship, of his humor, of his loyalty, of his self and of his love. Darrell would always say that he tried to make someone smile or laugh every day because in his words, “that makes me feel good”. He will be remembered by many for his generosity and for helping family, friends and complete strangers in any way he could because he believed that was the right thing to do. He was a devoted son, a loyal brother, a loving father, a dedicated friend , a lover of life and a believer in God Almighty. He is now reunited with his mother who he adored, his father who gave him is humor and his sister who he watched over. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Darrell’s son, Spencer was the love of his life. He was incredibly proud of him and considered him to be his greatest accomplishment.

Those left to cherish his memory are his son, Spencer Alitz of Mason City; Siblings, Duane (Barb) Alitz of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Deb (Tim) Thompson of Mason City and Doug (Laura) Alitz of Mason City; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.

Darrell was preceded in death by his father, mother and his sister Diane Alitz.
