NORTHWOOD — Rose Marie “Rosie” Kruger, 90, of Northwood, a devoted mother, longtime church choir member and gifted gardener whose kindness touched generations of family and friends, died Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at the Good Samaritan Society in St. Ansgar.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 8, at First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St. in Northwood, with Pastor Becky Sogge officiating. Visitation was held for one hour before the service at the church. Rosie was laid to rest at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.
Rosie was born March 31, 1936, on her family’s farm near Grafton, the youngest of three children of Fred and Helen (Fiala) Navratil.
She attended Grafton High School, where she embraced school life as a cheerleader, majorette and basketball player while also taking part in theatrical productions. After graduation, Rosie even had an opportunity to pursue modeling school.
On November 8, 1958, Rosie married Harvey Marvin Kruger at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. The couple built a life together that centered on family, and the adoption of their daughter, Laurie, brought Rosie and Harvey tremendous joy. They remained together until Harvey’s death in 1994.
Rosie poured much of her energy into caring for her home and the people she loved. Gardening became one of her special talents, and she cultivated both vegetables and flowers, with roses holding a particularly special place in her heart. She also helped champion Northwood’s red geranium as the community flower.
Her kitchen was another place where Rosie’s talents shined. Family and friends enjoyed her homemade pies, cookies and other recipes that helped carry family traditions from one generation to the next.
Rosie also enjoyed keeping journals, sending cards to people she cared about and sharing flowers from her gardens with friends and neighbors.
Her Christian faith remained an important part of her life. Rosie was active first at Emmanuel Lutheran Church and later at First Lutheran Church in Northwood. Remarkably, she sang in church choir for nearly 65 years.
Her community involvement also included serving as president of Rebecca Circle and participating in the Green Thumb Garden Club, Mother’s Club and the 20’s Club.
Family members remember Rosie as a strong and gracious woman with a generous spirit, an uplifting smile and a natural tendency to put the needs of others ahead of her own.
Those carrying on her memory include her daughter, Laurie (Mark) Camarigg of Texas; sister Mary Anne Marrell of Arizona; nieces and nephews; extended family members; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Marvin Kruger; her parents; brother Richard Navratil; and other loved ones.
