URBANDALE — An Iowa man accused of leaving another person critically injured during a domestic-related attack now faces attempted murder, multiple willful-injury charges and three counts of child endangerment.
Urbandale police were called to the 6500 block of Madison Avenue at approximately 11:16 p.m. Sunday, August 2, 2026, following a report of an assault.
Responding officers found an adult male suffering from serious injuries. The victim was taken to a Des Moines-area hospital, where police said he remained in critical condition as of Wednesday morning.
The alleged attacker, identified as 43-year-old Urbandale resident Zung Peng, was located at the scene and arrested.
Police initially charged Peng (pictured at top) with two counts of willful injury causing serious injury, both Class C felonies.
Following additional investigation by Urbandale police detectives and consultation with the Polk County Attorney’s Office, authorities announced several more charges on August 5.
Peng is now accused of attempted murder, a Class B felony; three counts of child endangerment, aggravated misdemeanors; and two additional counts of willful injury causing serious injury.
Altogether, jail records list four Class C felony willful-injury counts in connection with the case.
Police have not publicly explained how the victim was injured, what weapon or object may have been involved, or how the three children were allegedly placed in danger.
Authorities described the incident as isolated and domestic-related and said there was no continuing threat to the community.
The case follows another violent Iowa domestic attack covered by NIT earlier this year, in which police said a woman was hospitalized after being stabbed by her domestic partner.
Attempted murder is one of Iowa’s most serious criminal charges. A Class B felony conviction generally carries a prison term of up to 25 years, while each Class C felony carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years.
Peng was booked into the Polk County Jail at 8:12 a.m. on August 3.
Jail records show cash-only bail totaling at least $150,000 in the two felony cases: $50,000 on the initial willful-injury case and $100,000 on the later attempted-murder and child-endangerment case.
Peng was also being held on a separate alleged probation violation with an additional $5,000 cash bond.
The attempted-murder and additional charges were filed under Polk County case FECR405712. The initial willful-injury charges were listed under case FECR405685.
Peng’s alleged probation violation was filed under case OWOM098258.
The addition of child-endangerment charges places the case among several recent Iowa investigations involving allegations that children were endangered during violent or dangerous incidents.
NIT recently reported on two Des Moines parents charged with child endangerment following the death of an infant, while another Northern Iowa case involved a mother accused of placing children at risk after a previous child-endangerment conviction.
The Urbandale investigation remains active, and detectives said additional information will be released when appropriate.
Peng has not been convicted of the charges and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
