The fastest way out of a month of boiling water is to treat it at the tap the family actually drinks from. A Cerro Gordo County farmstead did exactly that in June, putting one of the point-of-use water filtration systems built for well and floodwater sources on the kitchen line while the bigger question of the well itself waited. The stockpot came off the stove in an afternoon. The well is still an open file.
That split is the whole point of this story. Treating water where the household drinks it is the fast fix, repairing or replacing a 1960s shallow well is the slow one, and confusing the two costs a family weeks at the stove. The farm in question runs corn and beans north of Mason City, four people in the house, and a well that predates the current owner’s parents.
Spring Flooding Reaches Shallow Wells First
April and May came in wet. Field tile ran for days at a stretch, the low corner of the barnyard held water into the second week, and the well pit sat below grade the way pits dug in that era usually do. The well drank whatever the field gave it. Ask around the county and the same detail keeps turning up: the wells that go bad first are the shallow ones finished before grouted casings and sealed caps were routine, and it is surface water, not depth, that decides.
Depth matters less than construction here. A 38-foot well with a cracked pit wall will take on runoff that a 200-foot drilled well never sees, which is why two neighbors half a mile apart can get opposite results from the same rain. The county sanitarian’s first question is usually not how deep the well is but where the water standing on top of the ground goes.
A Positive Sample Changes The Whole Kitchen
The sample went to the lab in late May and came back positive for coliform bacteria, with nitrate higher than anything the family had measured before. Nothing about the water had looked or tasted different. State that part plainly: a flooded well, or any well with a new positive result, gets tested rather than judged by clarity or taste, and nobody in the house drinks it until a test says it is safe. The US Geological Survey’s work on domestic supply wells has detected microbial contaminants in about 33% of the private wells it sampled, and its order of operations is the one to copy: test, treat, then drink.
Boiling handles bacteria. It does nothing for nitrate, and as water evaporates it leaves more of it behind.
Nitrate matters most for infants under six months and for pregnant women, which is not a hedge, it is the group public health nurses ask about first. For a month the kitchen ran on jugs: produce washed in bottled water, the coffee pot filled from town water hauled home in the pickup, a pot on the back burner most evenings. The coffee is the thing people complain about.
Questions Neighbors Keep Asking The County
Neighbors compare notes fast, and the county public health office fielded more well calls in June than it had in May. Bacteria is not the only thing being asked about anymore. The University of Iowa’s IIHR launched a program called Iowa INSIGHT in August 2026 to monitor naturally occurring arsenic in private wells, with north central Iowa, Cerro Gordo County included, among the areas it is watching, because arsenic exposure carries cancer and melanoma risk. Arsenic is geology rather than runoff, so a wet spring has little to do with it, and it shows up on a different test than the one this family ran.
How Soon Should A Flooded Well Be Tested?
As soon as the water has receded and the pump is running clear, then again a couple of weeks later. One clean result after a flood is a snapshot; the second one tells you whether the first held. Testing runs through county public health offices and the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa, and what a given county covers or charges varies, so call yours and ask what your options are.
Does Boiling Make Well Water Safe To Drink?
For bacteria, a rolling boil does the job, which is why the advisory exists in the first place. For nitrate, arsenic or a fuel spill it accomplishes nothing and can leave the concentration worse than it started. That is the trap in a boiling routine: it feels like a complete answer while covering one column of the lab report.
Can A Filter Replace Fixing The Well?
No, and nobody selling one should tell you otherwise. Treatment at the tap gives a household drinkable water this week, while a compromised casing, a pit that floods or a well too shallow for its setting is a separate repair with its own bid and its own calendar. Run the two in parallel and the family never has to choose between clean water and a fixed well.
Point Of Use Treatment Ended The Boiling
What went in was a portable micro-filtration and ultraviolet unit on the kitchen supply, the sort rated in the neighborhood of a gallon a minute, light enough for one person to carry, built on NSF-certified components and a multi-stage path manufacturers rate at 99.9999 percent against bacteria, viruses and parasites. It was running the day it arrived. The stockpot went back in the cupboard that night. Match the unit to the lab report, though, because filtration and UV are aimed at organisms, and nitrate or arsenic call for reverse osmosis or an anion exchange setup instead.
A family two townships over went a different way in 2024, running a garden hose off a neighbor’s rural water line and living on it for six weeks. It worked. It also meant a hose across a gravel road all summer, and they installed a treatment unit the following spring.
Well pits are their own subject, and the county sanitarian would rather talk about abandoned wells nobody ever capped, the ones that sit in fencerows collecting whatever drains past them. What This Farmstead Would Do Sooner
Two things, both cheap in hindsight. The first is a baseline test in a dry month, so a positive result after a wet one has something to be measured against; without it nobody can say whether the bacteria arrived in May or had been there for a decade. The second is refusing to wait on the well repair to be scoped, priced and scheduled before making the kitchen tap usable, because those two clocks run at wildly different speeds. Point-of-use water filtration systems are a stopgap in the honest sense of the word, and a stopgap that gives a household drinkable water in April is worth more than a plan that starts in September. The well work is bid for October. The boiling stopped in June.
