TULSA, Okla. – Iowa State advanced six wrestlers into the second round Thursday afternoon inside the BOK Center. The Cyclones went a combined 6-2 in session one as Zach Redding, Paniro Johnson, David Carr, Marcus Coleman, Yonger Bastida and Sam Schuyler all won their first found matches.

Carr and Coleman each picked up bonus points for the Cyclones.

In the team race, Iowa State sits tied for 10th place with 8.0 points.

In a rematch from the first weekend of the season, Redding widened the gap against Campbell’s Domenic Zaccone. The Manorville, N.Y. native secured two takedowns in a 7-2 victory.

Johnson got through to the second round with a tight victory over Ohio’s Alec Hagan. Neither wrestler could manage a takedown in the match as the bout went to tiebreakers. Johnson finished with a 30-second riding time advantage to come out on top, 2-2 TB-1 (RT).

Carr took care of business in his first-round match, securing four takedowns and 3:24 of riding time in a 10-2 major decision over Harvard’s Josh Kim.

Coleman also tallied a major decision in the first round with a 12-3 victory over Hofstra’s Jacob Ferreira. It sets up a Cy-Hawk rematch in the second round with Iowa’s Abe Assad.

At 197 pounds, two first-period takedowns were all Bastida needed to defeat Utah Valley’s Evan Bockman, 5-2. It was the pair’s fourth time wrestling this season and Bastida’s third win of the year over Bockman.

Schuyler grabbed a first-period takedown and put on a tough ride before coasting to a 4-2 victory over Michael Wolfgram.

At 141 pounds, Casey Swiderski dropped his first-round match to Oklahoma’s Mosha Schwartz, 4-1.

Jason Kraisser gave No. 8 seed Ed Scott of NC State all he could handle, but came up short, 5-3. Kraisser scrambled into a leg as time expired but just ran out of time before her could finish.
