J.D. Scholten: Iowa Farmers Struggling To Make a Dime as a Result of Trump’s Trade War

Scholten wants King out of Congress.

SIOUX CITY — J.D. Scholten, congressional candidate for Iowa’s 4th district, today published an opinion piece in the Sioux City Journal about President Trump’s reckless trade war and the prioritization of special interests and multinational corporations over small and family farmers. Scholten called for ending the trade war, forming a global coalition to hold China accountable, and bringing farmers to the decision-making table to address the underlying issues in the agricultural industry, including the influence of mega agribusinesses, market consolidation, and low commodity prices.

An excerpt of J.D. Scholten’s op-ed reads: “Even if the tariffs and trade war end today — and they won’t — Iowa farmers will still struggle to make a dime. There exists a serious crisis of faith among those whose livelihoods are now being threatened by out of touch politicians who let special interests and multinational corporations dictate their agricultural policy.

“As a result of the lack of farmer-focused policy, here’s what we’re facing: a half decade of low commodity prices, the rising cost of equipment, figuring out how to plant, grow, and harvest in an ever-changing climate amid more frequent floods and droughts, and market consolidation that favors multinational agribusinesses over Iowa farmers.”

Background: Born in Ames and raised in Sioux City, J.D. Scholten is a 5th generation Iowan. J.D. served as the 2018 Democratic nominee against Rep. Steve King in Iowa’s 4th District, earning nationwide attention for his people-powered grassroots campaign that fell just 3 points short in a district that Donald Trump won by 27 points in 2016. He played baseball at Morningside College and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. After college, he pursued a professional baseball career and pitched in 7 different countries. He then worked as a paralegal, specializing in Intellectual Property and trials law, but found his true passion in helping others through pro-bono cases. He later launched his congressional campaign and continues to be a powerful voice for rural, working, and underserved communities in Iowa.
