Single-vehicle accident sends Mason City man to hospital via helicopter

RURAL CERRO GORDO COUNTY – A Mason City man was hurt when the pickup truck he was riding in rolled off Interstate 35 early Monday.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident happened Monday morning, August 28, 2017 at around 1:05 AM near the 181 mile marker of southbound Interest 35, near Thornton. A 1999 Chevy Silverado driven by 32-year-old Case Schumacher of Clarion was southbound on Interstate 35 when he lost control of the pickup, rolling it into the median. A passenger in the pickup, 37-year-old Andrew Lukes of Mason City became trapped in the vehicle. He was extricated by emergency responders and then flown by Mercy Air Med to Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

The accident remains under investigation.

The Cerro Gordo county sheriff’s department, Mason City fire and EMT’s along with Thornton Fire Department assisted the Iowa State Patrol.
