RURAL BUCHANAN COUNTY, IOWA – Four Amish children riding in a horse-drawn buggy were hurt this week in pickup truck collision, sending them all to hospitals.
On Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at approximately 8:35 AM, Buchanan County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident with multiple injuries in the 1700 blk Fairbank-Amish Boulevard. According to the investigation, a 1991 Chevrolet C1500 pickup truck operated by Justin Annis of Fairbank was traveling south on Fairbanks-Amish Blvd. when a southbound horse-drawn Amish buggy carrying four juveniles turned into the path of the Annis vehicle. Annis was unable to avoid a collision, hitting the left side of the buggy. All four juveniles were ejected from the buggy upon impact. The Annis vehicle continued southbound and into the west ditch, striking a utility pole and coming to rest. All four juveniles were transported to local area hospitals before some of them were transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City with unspecified injuries. Annis was uninjured in the accident and no charges are pending at this time. The Amish horse was also uninjured in the accident.
The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Fairbank Fire Department, Fairbank Ambulance and Area Ambulance Service.
