Estherville man says he’s not guilty of sexual abuse of teen

ESTHERVILLE – An Estherville man arrested after he allegedly carried on a sexual relationship with a young teen girl says he’s not guilty, and now faces a felony burglary charge as well.

On January 5, 2017, the Estherville Police Department received a complaint from the Iowa Department of Human Services about possible sexual relationship that involved a 21-year-old male and a 15-year-old female who both reside in Estherville.

During the investigation, it was determined that the 21-year-old male started a sexual relationship in April of 2016 when he was 20 and the female was 15 years old. As a result of the investigation, Estherville Police arrested 21-year-old Dakota Kelly. Kelly was charged with Sexual Abuse in the 3rd degree a class “C” Felony. Kelly appeared in front of a magistrate and was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.

Estherville Police were assisted in the investigation by Iowa Department of Human Services, Centers Against Sexual Abuse, and the Child Advocacy Center in Sioux City.

Kelly has entered a not-guilty plea in this case and awaits an April 11 jury trial.

In addition, Spirit Lake police have charged Kelly with felony third-degree burglary. He pled not guilty last year and is awaiting a hearing in April.
