Iowa man allegedly eats bag of narcotics as police closed in, later passes away

DES MOINES – An Iowa man ran from police and ingested what they called a “bag of narcotics” and later died.

According to the Des Moines police department, on March 23, 2016 at 10:15 AM, officers from the Des Moines Police Department Vice and Narcotics Section attempted to arrest Lamont Walls related to an ongoing narcotics-related investigation.

Mr. Walls refused to comply with the investigating officers and ran from them, police say.

After a short pursuit on foot, Mr. Walls was apprehended and arrested. During the arrest, officers saw Mr. Walls ingest what they believed to be a bag of narcotics. Out of concern for Mr. Walls’ health due to the suspected narcotic ingestion, the officers requested Des Moines Fire Department Fire Medics respond to the scene. Mr. Walls was transported to a local hospital by fire medics. After medical evaluation, he was released by physicians, and transported to the Polk County Jail for booking.

Police say that Lamont Walls died after being found unresponsive in his jail cell.

“The Des Moines Police Department would like to extend their condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Walls,” the agency said in a statement Sunday evening.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting an investigation into the death of Walls, of Des Moines, who was in the custody of the Polk County Jail.

On Friday, March 25, 2016 at 5:34 p.m. staff members of the Polk County Jail, as well as on-site medical staff, responded to a radio transmission requesting assistance from an officer who found an unconscious male, identified as Walls. Jail staff and medical personnel initiated life-saving measures and called for an ambulance. Mr. Walls was transported to a local hospital by Des Moines Fire/Rescue where he was later pronounced deceased.
Mr. Walls was arrested by Des Moines Police and booked into the Polk County Jail on March 23, 2016, at 4:41 p.m. on charges of Probation Violation, Interference with Official Acts and Preventing Apprehension/Obstructing Prosecution.

Currently, an investigation is being conducted by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. The State Jail Inspector was also notified. Due to the continuing investigation, no further details are available at this time.
