MASON CITY – The city of Mason City is seeking demolition contractors with expertise and experience in demolition of single-family properties for upcoming projects.

Mason City officials anticipate that between 5 and 9 properties will be acquired between April 1, 2016 and July 31, 2016.  These single-family properties will be acquired by the City through a FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program-funded flood mitigation buyout.  They are located in the area of 22nd Street SE near Mason Creek and were damaged in the 2008 flood.

FEMA regulations require that demolition must be completed within 90 days of acquisition by the city and must follow certain guidelines.

According to the city’s web site, after flood buyout properties are purchased and cleared of all structures, the land is turned over to the Mason City Park Department for maintenance.

Currently, the city is working with homeowners in the area of 7th Street NE, where many homes were damaged and then removed following the 2008 flood.  A possible disc golf course is planned for that now-vacant area, which is north of the East Park sledding hill.

City officials haven’t discussed plans for the 22nd Street SE area once the acquired flood homes are removed.

You bunch of stumble bums

I grew up in the 22nd street area. We used to play around the creek all the time. It never, never flooded until the developers came in with their damn parking lots and culverts that damned up the creek. That flood was man made and the wrong people are paying for it while the realtors got rich.

Yes, but back when you were young, you had to concern yourselves with dinosaurs and dicovering fire

At least we knew how to spell. Dumb Azz.

Its flooded with losers, not all people but it has been over run by thugs .druggies and just plain old losers.only , If you live on Monroe you know the area that needs to be replaced or make the slum lords clean up those rat traps.

Perhaps but irrelevant to this topic of FEMA buyouts.

8 years later, wow. now that’s progress
