DES MOINES – A bill was introduced in the Iowa Legislature this session that would require background checks on ice cream truck drivers in an effort to protect children.

Introduced January 23rd, House File 55 provides that “a business that operates a motor vehicle primarily marketing the sale and dispensing of ice cream or other food products from or near the motor vehicle to children may require an employee, vendor, contractor, or agent of the business to undergo a criminal history and abuse registry record check by the business.”

Information relating to Iowa criminal history, the sex offender registry, the child abuse registry, and the dependent adult abuse registry” would be obtained.

At this time, the bill is in subcommittee and several lobbying organizations have indicated support for the bill.
