Cleaning and pressure drops can allow bacteria and other substances to enter the water. As a precaution, the city of Sheffield and the DNR advise residents to boil their water until test results show water is safe to drink.
Bring all water to a boil; let it boil for one minute. Let it cool before using. Use boiled or bottled water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation. Untreated water can be used for bathing and similar purposes.
Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. Bacteria in the water may pose greater health risks for infants, young children, some of the elderly and people with compromised immune systems.

The city is collecting water samples for laboratory testing. After water samples test clean for bacteria, the city will lift the boil advisory.
