MASON CITY – NIT continues to look into allegations that there was inappropriate activities between a Cerro Gordo county jailer and a female inmate, and learned today that an investigation into the matter has been mostly concluded.
NorthIowaToday.com reported in July that Cerro Gordo county sheriff Kevin Pals would neither confirm nor deny that there had been certain activities that had taken place at the law enforcement center (LEC) between a male jailer and a long-time female inmate. Sheriff Kevin Pals last month told NIT he “Can’t respond at this time.”
Today, however, as NIT continued to seek answers and shed light into the matter, Sheriff Pals confirmed that an internal investigation as well as an investigation by Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has been completed.
“The DCI found no basis for charges,” Sheriff Pals said.
However, an internal investigation led to the matter being dealt with “internally”, Sheriff Pals said.
In addition, the county attorney is also reviewing the matter, and charges could be brought from that office once that investigation is completed.
When pressed for clarity as to whether there had been sexual contact between a jailer and female inmate, Sheriff Pals declined to confirm or deny that detail, saying he would wait until the county attorney weighed in.
